++ EDUCATION YEARS ++

This is the 25 March 2004 edition of this page

Whilst EDUCATION is a continuous life-time experience,
I'll deal, first with the FORMAL side of my pleasures.

PRIMARY SCHOOL

I attended the St Nicholas Lane Primary School (a quarter-mile approx walk from home) from about 1941 to 1948. I stayed in the top class for three years due to my previous fast progress - and the fact that I couldn't leave until I was 11!!

SECONDARY SCHOOL

Having been the ONLY person in the school to pass the '11-plus' that year, I then went to a Grammar School from 1948 until 1953.

That was the PALMERS ENDOWED SCHOOL FOR BOYS.

The education there was the 'best in the country', generally getting the best results of all schools (only the 'Manchester Grammar' getting anywhere near us!) and I went straight from my 'O levels' to 'A' and 'S' levels, and was awarded a State Scholarship which I was to take up after my slightly delayed National Service (lasting from 1955-57).

UNIVERSITY

This was in two phases, the first being at the IMPERIAL COLLEGE OF SCIENCE. reading "Electrical Engineering" (under the State Scholarship) from 1957-8
The second phase was at the CITY UNIVERSITY reading "Applied Physics" (under the Grant from the Ministry [my employer!]) from 1958-61. That got me my First Class Honours Degree.

Next, I'll deal with my INFORMAL Education.
