** The HOLIDAY YEARS **
This page is the 23 November 2004 edition of this page.
I differentiate between HOLIDAYS and EXPLORATIONS!
What I do, mostly, nowadays is to EXPLORE, although it was not always like
that. As a youngster - I would 'holiday' with my parents (although the 'exploring
bug' was with me then!!)
For instance, during the years 1938-1940, I holidayed in Cornwall, being based
near POLZEATH.
Then in 1941 and 1942 WARMINSTER was our base!
In the years from 1946 to 1949, we were based in Cornwall at CHAPEL AMBLE
and at POLZEATH.
In the years from 1950 to 1953, we joined up with my parents friends, the Wilson's,
and holidayed in Polzeath, Daymer Bay and Perranporth (in Cornish Caravans).
By 1954, I was doing Cycling holiday/explorations covering from Essex to Somerset
(and back!). This was partly by YHA hostels - and partly in a caravan used by my
parents.
My final holiday as a single man was during my summer-leave from the RAF in 1955,
when I used trains to get me from Wiltshire (where stationned) to Oban (in Scotland).
As a married man, I honeymooned with my wife (1959) in Ilfracombe (Somerset) -
and in 1960 caravanned in Barmouth (West Wales), followed up (in 1961) with a
hotel holiday in Barry (South Wales) - and in 1962 having a BUTLIN's Holiday in
PWLLHELI (North Wales).
My final 'holiday' (as such) was in 1963 when the wife and I holidayed at the
Minehead BUTLIN's.
1964 , still with Butlin's, was the first of the EXPLORATION vacations in their
site at Clacton (Essex).
In 1965, I returned to holidaying with the Camping Club at several places in the UK,
joining my wife's sister and family, in Cheddar, Abergavenny and elsewhere.
