Return from Civilisation --- Chapter Nine --- ICELAND - 1994
Dawn broke, or more precisely, just "crept up on us" here in REYJAVIK at the ESJA HOTEL, whilst I watched some Motor Sport 'live' from Magny Cours (it was the Practice session for the FRENCH GRAND PRIX!). There were some interesting interviews with relevant people. This was followed by Motor Cycling from the Hungaroring. Nice stuff!

I then went for a walk around town before leaving, - visiting the BOTANIC GARDENS, Parks, Animals, flowers - and so on - before returning for further Motor Cycling in the Hotel (or rather the TV in my room!). This proved to be the ITALIAN GP (Live) for the 250cc machines - followed by the previous week's 500cc DUTCH GP recording!

Then it was back to MUGELLO for this week's 500cc ITALIAN GP (Live!)

Afterwards, I took a gentle walk in the Sports Area, an architecturally DIFFERENT Church, a Camp Site and the Swimming Pool - before returning to the Hotel ESJA to await my coach for KEFLAVIK. I passed some time by getting my diaries and paperwork up-to-date.

The journey was three-quarters of an hour to Keflavik, after we had done three-quarters of an hour of pickups!! I sat next to a 'Barber-Shop-Singer' from HOLLAND - and we chatted away in English for the whole journey.

At the AIRPORT, I caught the FI452 flight to HEATHROW in the scheduled B757-200. It had a 19second 'roll' along the runway for its 16.00hrs departure. This was the same aircraft-type that I flew TO Iceland on the outward journey, - but this time we had a lower passenger-loading.

Touchdown at HEATHROW was at 19.50 hours (having put the watch 'forward' an hour in flight) and then I proceeded to Paddington via the UNDERGROUND and, there, I stayed at the BORDER Hotel for one night (using the BURGER KING restaurant to provide sustenance as my usual haunts were 'closed')

On MONDAY, 4th July 1994, I took my breakfast in the BORDER HOTEL's little restaurant, being served by the wonderful WELSH 'Singing Cook' (a Male-Voice choir participant) and an AUSTRALIAN waitress. I caught the 08.48am train back to Malvern.

I now knew that I'd returned from the Fantastically Civilised Iceland and was back in the UK.. Fortunately, Malvern is perhaps the most CIVILISED part of ENGLAND, with its wonderful HILLS and people. Hence I've made my own homes there (three since 1960) after being in several 'digs' since 1955.

However, being determined to return to Iceland many times, you can also read about some other visits there, on this WebSite!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Return, now, to Icelandic index for reorientation.
