** MILEAGE (and Kilometre) RECORDS **

This page is the Edition dated 18 June 2005.

The TOTAL, now, after swanning around the UK for two and a half years, after my return from ANTARCTICA in December 2002, was 635317 miles. 2003 resulted in the LOWEST annual mileage for many years. (Since 1984!!!)

My ANNUAL total-mileages have been, since 1992:-

10718 1992
14516 1993
 9512 1994
22871 1995
23980 1996
27331 1997
61649 1998 - My Annual RECORD!!
14733 1999
16471 2000
39702 2001
52065 2002 - my second largest ANNUAL mileage.
 5965 2003
 7458 2004
 3672 2005 (so far!)

With all the journeys in 1998, many of which were 'long-haul', not only did I get my own personal annual record for air-mileage , but my own annual record for TOTAL mileage!

Similarly, 2002 has provided my 2nd-highest annual total!

As forecast, the TOTAL passed HALF A MILLION miles in February '99 "on the plane on the way back from Cyprus!!!"

Post-analyses showed that it was while I was at about 33000 feet above TRIESTE, the Italian town on the Adriatic. Never knowingly been there, Sir, honestly!!

As can be seen from the chart below - the ONE MILLION kilometres (Grand Total) was also arrived at!! THAT SIGNIFICANT 'Milestone' (or should it be called a 'Kilometre-stone'??) was passed whilst on the 27th July 2003 trip to PORTMEIRION in North Wales (round about the spot where the coach had to be stopped and cooled-off for fear of the engine's overheating!)

This is today's update of the breakdowns of the total mileage and kilometres. Fascinating?!! It puts the whole thing into perspective.

GREEN TRAVEL

There are current attempts by most governments to 'encourage' citizens to make LESS journeys by PRIVATE transport.

My own mileage-data, in the above mentionned spreadsheet, keeps tabs on the percentage of private vehicle travel expressed as a percentage of total miles - year by year.

A summary of these percentages is as follows:-

Years %Private Reasons

1938-1947 100% Childhood (Dad's car & my bike)
1948-1960 15%-54% School boy (Cycling & buses)
1961-1981 31%-100% Married motorist & tourer
1982-1992 78%-95% Long-distance private motoring
1993&1994 46%-53% Increase in long-distance Public
                                   transport
1995-1999 7%-19% Vast public transport travel
2000 8% High Public Transport Travel
2001 2% But decreasing - will eventually approach ZERO
2002 0.2% I've reached the ideal!! Can I keep it up??!!(Private Taxis!)
2003 0.2% Only buses and coaches now!!
2004 0.06% Ditto!
2005 0.00% Ditto!

So it can be done!! My reasons are social, economic, fun and
hassle-free! They are GREEN despite the BLUE screen-print!!
