++ USA PARKS '98 ++

This is the 8 March 2005 edition of this page showing the outline of this fabulous Trip to the NATIONAL PARKS and several digital photos taken there. The shutter in my 35mm camera failed at an early stage - and wasn't apparent until SIX blank reels were returned to me. I also took about 50 digital shots (thank goodness!!) and some are included here.

JUNE: THE NATIONAL PARKS OF THE USA.

This was stunning, if impressive is too mild a word!

Some of the interesting points were (and these will be added to - as time progresses):-

2 June '98

* Flight from UK to Denver, Colorado via Chicago's O'Hare

[I flew, on 2:6:98, down in seat 30E, on on American Airlines B767-300, via Chicago's O'Hare airport and its own baggage reclaim, handed in the 'Customs Declaration Form, then proceeded to the 'Transfer Point' for my Flight to Denver - on a 'Super 80', it turned out (my first flight in one of these!)]

4 June '98

* Garden of the Gods - mountains & Trading Post
-- how's this for a sample:
Gof Gods- Mountains.

* Colorado Springs - met up with an ex-colleague here.
* Wolf Creek Pass - on the 'great divide'.
[this was a very scenic journey as I travelled up the 'creek' to ever-increasing altitudes until I got to 10857 ft above sea-level. That, there, is the GREAT DIVIDE - and our driver didn't even stop! That, I felt, was a great loss - beautiful walking scenery beside the rushing creek and we missed it! However, we did make a 'photo-stop' after we'd left the snows behind, and overlooked the remainder of the valley. We were then just short of Pagosa Springs. We progressed from there to Durango through beautiful scenery also. I stayed the night at the Quality Inn in Durango.]
* San Juan Mountains

* Old Silver-mining towns of Durango and Silverton

First shot.

This is in Silverton

* Ride on the Silverton Narrow-Gauge railway
[ After some early morning Country Music on the TV from 6.10 a.m, I arose and had a fabulous breakfast in good company with excellent repartee! We made an early start by coach to reach Durango Station. There we boarded the excellent Durango-Silverton narrow gauge railroad. This gave us a trip through stupendous mountain scenery - climbing all the way until about 9400ft up at Silverton!
Having bought stamps at the Post Office there, I was able to post cards to two lady friends back in the UK.
I had a great chat with a Texan guy in Silverton, - he's building his house up there. I refreshed myself with a 'frogurt' (a frozen yoghurt icecream) - 'cos it was quite hot there! It is a wonderful place with a great atmosphere, making one think one is in a fabulous 'film set'. But this place is FOR REAL!! ]

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS OF U.S.A TRAVEL

Surface travel is normally FUN, the distances long and the 'unexpected' happens!! For instance, on this leg of our journey by coach from Durango to Grand Canyon, we stopped near (just at, in fact) the FOUR STATES corner.
We partook our various refreshments - and then headed off for THE BIG ONE!! Generally heading west up until now, we needed to head in a south-westerly direction for this destination. Heading South, the first right turn for heading SW produced a police-holdup. We weren't allowed up that route for some reason. Still, only 50miles until the next right-turn!! Back in the coach we took very little notice of the detour. After the second and third detours (essentially bans on turning right) with an increase in the journey of nearly 200 miles, the driver gave detailed reasons.
We were, thus, prevented from traversing the Navajo Indian reservations. The story goes that there were some escaped and dangerous armed-fugitives SOMEWHERE in that area and the US Government didn't want to get tourist/travellers/explorers tied up in a dangerous situation. Shame on the authorites - just when we are looking for excitement!! Having missed the Navajo territory, we got to Grand Canyon by a circuitous route - via the Hopi Indian Reservation. We were late arriving at the Yavapai Lodge at Grand Canyon that evening.

* GRAND CANYON

My notes show that I didn't wake up until 3.30am in my comfortable location in the hotel in Durango. We started for Monument Valley, after a breakfast at KBob's again, and after the big detours (as in the 'Impressions' above) to avoid the dangerous criminals - and eventually arrived at Monument Valley where I accomplished some digital and 35mm photography. Most of the company had a meal in the restaurant in the 'valley' (not a valley really - but an open scorching desert!) but I and two others decided to explore the area and take photos. One can eat anywhere - but the chances of witnessing this scenery only exists in 'Western films' - and our (all too short) visit here! After the scorching atmosphere here in Monument Valley, we explored by coach closer to the vast rocks before heading off to Grand Canyon, itself. Once arrived there we caught another coach and joined a 'Hayride' to a barbecue near the Canyon. A 'Country Singer' entertained us (i.e sang) whilst we ate. A ride on the hay-wagon after it was over - and we arrived at the Yavapai Lodge and found our own rooms. In my own room with its TV, I tried to get some news on the Le Mans race from France as well as the Canadian GP. Clearly, this place is so insular that these world famous events might as well be on another planet!!

After a good night's sleep I did a pre-breakfast walk here.

With a one-night-stops we are having around these parks, it reinforces the feeling of 'living out of a suitcase'. On 8th June, when departing for the IMAX Theatre - and the Canyon itself - I repacked the case and got on the move at 6.30 a.m.. I donned the previous days clothes and set about doing the ULTIMATE Pre-Breakfast Walk - namely doing a solo TRAIL walk to the South Rim!! Just a 0.4mile stroll to 'the edge' and then the long-awaited MIND-BLOWING VIEWING in this region. I left the Yavapai Lodge and the Visitor Centre and just took-off on my own. A few chipmunks were intent on amusing me as they scurried around and in front of me. Eventually, breakfast (despite having zero-choice) was enjoyed when I joined up with some fellow-travellers.

The IMAX theatre was mind-blowing, too, with its Grand Canyon stories about its discoverers and adventurers. After that visit we did some South Rim exploration - with a walk that started at the Bright Angel Lodge. We did our own individual descents into the Canyon. I had to ensure that I'd left sufficient time for my climb back UP!! I did much photography on this route - but, you probably recall my earlier comment about the 'blank film' results on the 35mm camera.

* The MESA VERDE was impressive - and I won a video about it.
The place includes a 'severe' valley into the sides of which the Pueblo Indians built some impressive dwellings which remain until the present - for viewing but not habitation!! The following three views represent a selection-only. They were taken from across the valley - AND at one of the sites.!!
Across Valley.
Just across the Valley!
At an entrance.

Typical Windows/doors on some walls.

* Monument Valley
This place was bizarre!
So was the journey to get there - especially with those 'armed fugitives' on the run!
Three 'shots' follow - now what films have I seen them in?
1st MonumentValley.
I guess that you've seen this in the films!!

* Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell.
This is where we went after lunch at the Yavapai Lodge on 8th June as we entered UTAH. We were on the way to KANAB - which we arrived at around 7.15pm (adjusting the watches for a new time-zone!)
Chatting with a Northern Lass from the Manchester area, I heard that she was educated in the South of England, and has been looking after an elderly sick mother for many years. Her mother's recent death has allowed THIS trip to be her FIRST HOLIDAY. This particular Company, SAGA, impressed her enormously and she feels 'secure' and with no chance of being 'left behind'.
I made use of the room in Kanab to sort out my case, (which I'd been 'living out of' for a long time) and watch some very interesting 'DISCOVERY CHANNEL' TV.

9 June '98

* Zion National Park - good walks here.
After a easy half-day run by coach from Kanab (take-off was 8am after my 6.40am breakfast!) a leisurely journey got us to ZION NATIONAL PARK - which we approached by the East Entrance and its mile-long tunnel with 'windows' in the rocks. We indulged in multiple stops for photos etc..
A long descent via a number of hairpin bends to Pine Creek then lead us to the North Fork of the Virgin River. A stop at the Zion Visitor Center had a 35mm film show about the area. On reurning to the coach we headed off to the top of ZION Canyon where the Temple of Sinawava was. We returned to Zion Lodge midway down the canyon.
At the lodge I was able to 'escape' and go on my own explorations of features in the Canyon. These included (whilst munching a very large Ice-cream!) the walks via Emerald Pools, the waterfalls and the stunning scenery.
Earlier during the day we also stopped at --
* The checker-board Mesa.
where many of us photographed the very steep valley with sheer rocks on either side of the river-course. After an excellent day in this scenery, we returned to KANAB (which resembles an old movie-set) visited a movie-museum and had a Chuck-Wagon meal at Denny's , where we were welcomed by a 'cowboy' and got involved in the making of a movie which eventually got entitled "How the West was LOST!"
Altogether - a very GOOD day - during which we travelled 200 miles!!

* Salt Lake City -

	After a restless night, in KANAB, with independent firings from THREE air-conditionning
systems (my room and two others), I got up early, packed, had some chats with some
friends, had breakfast (7 a.m.) and got ready for the coach's departure for SALT LAKE
CITY. We would make calls at Bryce Canyon and make several other stops.

10 June '98

[ Bryce Canyon is not really a canyon at all - but better, as picture shows]

 Bryce Canyon!

The biggest of these stops was at 'Sunset Point' , from where we walked to 'Sunrise Point'. I took many photos in this beautiful scenic multi-peaked 'canyon'. Frances (Fran Boranski), our guide, obliged by taking photos of me, there, with my own camera. She told us about today's long distances, 'Mormonism' and about the US's Government levels of rule-making and accountability. (They included Federal, National, State, County, local & village!!)
Enroute, I stopped and lunched, visited a 'General Store' and also a reproduction WESTERN TOWN. There were considerable tail-backs of traffic as we neared Salt Lake City (even as far away as Provo). Just like Sydney's preparations for the 2000 Olympics - Salt Lake City was also preparing for the "2002 Winter Olympics" - so this accounted for much traffic already!! Some of their events will also take place in PROVO. (We heard that Denver wasn't interested because of the vast costs involved). The Mormon funds provide, apparently, considerable cash for publicity. We arrived at the SHILO Hotel around 6pm, indulging in coffee, relaxation and watching a Jane Goodall documentary on chimpanzees.

The cases didn't arrive my door until 19.09 hours - which was about an hour after WE arrived. I had a quick snack of "cheese & biscuits" and then went out to explore SALT LAKE CITY. To aid in this exploration, I picked up a (street) map from the hotel's reception desk. [I always do that!]. On this first trip, I headed North on 'West Temple' past the Information and Convention Centers, the Concert Hall, Library and the Museum of Art - heading towards 'Temple Square'!

The Temple Area looked terrific as I went East along 'South Temple' - and came across an entrance gate marked "VISITORS WELCOME". I started looking around the garden and was approached by two girls asking if I needed any help!! [ Remember that this is the world's prime Mormon City - and not London's Soho - so the context of their question is quite different!!!]. I thus explained that I'd got a map, but soon I'd have to get a better more detailed one of THEIR AREA. So we walked to the "South Visitor's Center" in the Temple Square and got a new MAP OF TEMPLE SQUARE & VICINITY POINTS OF INTEREST! That would set me up for my stay in the City!!

Following this, I spent an hour and a half exploring the site, its beautiful Assembly Hall, its
Assembly Hall

old, domed Tabernacle, its Temple in brilliant white stone which is a very attractive and outstanding with the backing of the black storm-clouds threatening thunder lightning and rain.

Then I went over Main Street to the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, its giant Latter-Day-Saints HQ Building and several others - then over State Street to the Brigham Young History Park and Grave site PLUS City Creek Park.

I then returned by the (unusually for me) exactly the same route to the hotel - but their South Visitor Center had closed and when I exitted the area those gates were also closed and and LOCKED (it's now 9 pm!). Pity really, because I wanted to take some photos there!!

I had met Margaret Campbell and another friend on this walk near Joseph Smith Memorial Building, - and chatted with another couple who'd wasted their two hours since 7pm eating in a restaurant. I say WASTED because one can EAT anywhere (like home) without for-going the loss of value exploration time whilst abroad!!

I then went back to my room for note-writing, having supper and preparing for bed. I eventually got into bed at about 10.30pm after watching a bloke on TV painting enthusiastically with water-colours (which reminded me to "have a go" again a few days after my return to the UK!). Good night all!!

Well, - it was a night with 'physical rest' but ....

11 June '98

.. no mental rest as I was constantly thinking about Digital Photo processing and THIS Web-Site development relating to the current USA visit. So began 11th June 1998!!
After the usual ablutions etc, I got dressed by 6.05 am.. One of the fellow travellers who was interested in my "Arctic Adventure" book warranted a small note about Publishers and contact-addresses. I took that note to a certain Margaret Campbell for breakfast time but there were only two of my 'group' (Fran and Ulrich) there - so I took it back to my own room.!
Our cases for todays trip were picked up at about 8 am. - ready for our 9am departure - and while I watched a couple of TV interests my case had gone. Our coach took us to the MORMON TEMPLE site where we stayed between three and four hours until the early afternoon. Various presentations, films, paperwork etc were dealt with before our departure for POCATELLO. This was a four hour journey with various stops en-route.!
The most interesting (for me) of these stops that our DRIVER, Ullrich, chose was at the HILL AEROSPACE MUSEUM near Ogden. I don't think that the female guide had any say in Ullrich's choice - but it was so fabulous that no-one complained. Most, like me, were totally enthralled. I didn't take the camera with me on this excursion - otherwise I would have taken too much film!!!! Amongst the host of craft that we viewed were the V1 rocket, the Fabulous SR-71 Blackbird,
'SR-71  BLACKBIRD'

the Super Fortress, Bell X Rocket-planes etc, etc, etc!!!
.

12 June '98

* Pocatello, Idaho [I took three walks here in what was a VERY HOT STAY!!]

I arrived at Pocatallo in the early evening and went straight away to the QUALITY INN to watch my own TV screen. I got well settled-in! My own room overlooked a POOL, but the door-window was very difficult to open to it. My dinner was included - and came with very long waiting times!! The reason was because ONLY two persons were assigned to deal with 40-odd people!! It was a 'management' fault rather than a waiter problem!!

Big chats with those on our table revealed that most of them had been in the war (1939-45) so I tried NOT to get involved in such discussions. More interesting was a Scottish couple (real explorer-types) who were soon to go off to Alaska and Russia (just after the current trip!). They will not be returning to Heathrow with us - but will go directly there!! They are KLM addicts for their air-miles!

I returned to my room to watch TV - which turned out to be yet another investigation into the Diana (Princess of Wales) death-ride in Paris. My view on who was to 'blame' in that episode has not changed. (My view is that the transport-manager [or his equivalent] should have vetted and ensured that all his drivers were fully fit, capable and well-balanced for ALL their tasks!)

With the air-conditionner set to LOW COOL, I then got to bed and sleep in my own time!

Well, I slept right through until 5.30am - sleeping again until I was awakened by a digital alarm-radio at 6.30 am. This was NOT my choice or setting - but I decided to get up at 7.03am anyway!! Breakfasting at 7.30 am by helping myself to fruit, fried eggs & potatoes, plus strawberry jam on toast to follow with, I was back in my room at 8.05am..

Having trouble with my repeated tries to exit directly from my room to the POOL outside, via the windowed door, I tried yet again. Seeing my struggles, a guy passing outside indicated how to do it. So EASY when one knows how!! This should be useful - as I'll be able to use my own room as a changing-room and go directly to the pool outside!!

Right now, however, I was ready to put on my back-pack for a walk to explore parts of this Middle-American Western town. I went out into the Pocatello Creek Road, then via East Almeda Rd, Wayne, Cedar, Washington - before returning via Almeda to my room on this VERY hot day. Having a mid-morning break, and refreshments, was called for! I had bought some items at a handy store, on the corner of Almeda & Hilme, called 'Common Cents' .

I took the last of my 96 digital-photos - of my own room from the 'pool' (and it reported MEMORY FULL) so any further US photos will have to be preceeded by 'selections and deletions'. Going 'out' again (for Walk No2), I started off in a N.E. direction along Pocatello Creek Road, Monte Vista, Lucille, Beth, Renee, Jessie, Fern, Alameda and returned via Pocatello Creek Road. Back in the hotel, I wrote many notes - and at 12.15pm I did more studying and reading on "Our National Parks" ( a library book from Malvern) on the subjects of YELLOWSTONE and GRAND TETON!!

After a while, at 13.10 hrs, I decided to do Walk No3 of the day, on a route very appropriate considering me and my web-site name, i.e starting on OLYMPUS DRIVE and then BALDY Ave. After these I went via the K-Mart shop but was back near my hotel at 14.15 hrs, being as it was VERY hot with incessant SUN at 90 degrees elevation!! I found a tree near a Lutheran Church for a later refreshment-break whilst on Baldy Ave! That shade provided a nice relief!! When back in my hotel room at the QUALITY INN, the place had been fully serviced with fresh coffee and other supplies.

I wrote my notes up, sustained by the said coffee and part of the K-Mart purchases. With this heat, I told myself I ought to relax - but HOW in this alien environment? The Turkey & Cheese sandwich from K-Mart helped!! The TV still shows STORM warnings with thunder, lightning and TORNADOS!! I was still sweltering even with the 'hi' and 'low' cool-programmes on the air-conditionner. I did miscellaneous TV watching and browsing in my room until 14.57hrs. Looking on the noticeboard at, 15.13hrs, I found that there were no details on tomorrow's times.

Then I had a shower and went to the hotel's pool - and the JACUZZI (but only up to my knees!) - for a bit of gentle floating on my back (i.e NO strenuous exercise in these temperatures). Being more of an explorer then a holiday-maker, I nevertheless chatted with some SAGA holiday-makers whose activities were even more relaxed than my back-packing around the countryside. After that cooling experience, I dried myself and returned to my writeup activities by 16.00hrs.

This room has the best FURNITURE of all the ones encountered on this tour! I relaxed in this delightful place and read more of the book "Colonies in Space" which I had bought in Cheltenham somewhat earlier. Next, I heard on CNN's news that NASA's "Shuttle91" has just 'touched down' safely. That then brought the "Shuttle-MIR-spacecraft" linkups to an end (MIR, even then, being too old and decrepid!)

By now, it was 16.49hrs so I watched motor-racing news (NASCAR & NHRA) and followed this by some beautiful 'Country-Music', before finishing the next chapter from "Colonies in Space" at 17.56hrs! TV then showed its 'Demolition and Destruction Derbys' in its motorsport coverage. I watched 12 heats of that - and the 24car FINAL! Not many were running at the end!

Slowing myself (well, my mind) down, I proceeded to packing for the following day in the TV advert-slots. (the USA has plenty of those!) More Country-Music on TV from 9pm proved to be mainly Folk-Music so at 9.30pm I switched off and went to sleep from my lights-out at 10pm.. GOODNIGHT ALL!!

* Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
(had been ravaged by fire, recently).

13 June '98

After waking up at 6.00 am (just what I wanted), I got my cases outside the door at 7am and went into breakfast. Departure for YELLOWSTONE and JACKSON was at 7.45am.. Because I had done the bulk of my packing last night (advert-times on the TV) there was hardly any more packing to do this morning!!

We stopped off at several points before reaching YELLOWSTONE - and eventually entered it by its West Entrance, travelling Eastwards via Gibbon Falls, Norris and Canyon Village. I got my first real viewing point from "Uncle Tom's Trail" which gave us all a good view from UPPER FALLS on the YELLOWSTONE RIVER. We proceeded Southwards, and at the MUD VOLCANO (with its several FUMEROLS) took some photos. Just then, the HEAVY rain started - and I took a close-up photo of a WILD BISON. (Unfortunately, as you've already read, my 35mm camera went 'u/s' and therefore the following picture was one that I grabbed with the 'digital' at an 'Information Center'.)
Wild Bison (close).

Immediately after that, there was a bombardment from HEAVY HAILSTONES - so I made a quick dash for 'cover' in our coach, but not before it caused stinging on my ears and battering my head!!

From here onwards, there was CONTINUOUS rain until we reached the 'Continental Divide' between Grant Village and Yellowstone's OLD FAITHFUL Geyser. Fortunately, the sun shone brightly as we approached 'Old Faithful' - and our driver (Ullrich) noticed that a lot of people were ready and waiting for its next ERUPTION! It certainly wasn't the same as Strokkur in ICELAND (which just 'belched' every few minutes) - but it gradually 'announced itself' (not on a regular basis) with increasing heights and POWERs - successively improving on its previous ALTITUDE and VOLUME!!!

Even OLD FAITHFUL put on a REAL PERFORMANCE as I 'snapped' it once, then twice and thrice, until my film ran out. As the 35mm film rewound itself, I could enjoy the CONTINUED performance!

From this moment, I visited their 'Statistics Room', an Ice Cream Place, 'The LODGE' (like an old 'End of the Trail' venue that we used to have!) and then got back on the coach with ULLRICH.

* Grand Teton National Park
Then we made our way out of YELLOWSTONE (once we had collected other 'members') through the JOHN D ROCKEFELLER MEMORIAL PARKWAY into GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK (again with some interesting stops, including one by a lake - and a shop that was selling a large 1 ft by 5 ft framed photo of GRAND TETON. Now, if I was travelling in my own car, I'd have bought that for the fabulous price of $4.95 - but as it was, its size was a limitation for coach and AIR travel. Reluctantly, I left it there!!

I arrived in JACKSON HOLE (after 'Fran' had solved my mystery about the June Carter/Johnny Cash song "We're goin' to JACKSON"!!) Apparently, they weren't singing about THIS place but about - but about JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI!! Problem Solved!

THIS place is fabulous, - just like a mammoth 'film-set', and our 'Best Western Hotel' is at the end of it. It provided the BEST room that I'd ever had in ANY Hotel!! And I've stayed in a few!! It was just a short walk to find 'a few refreshments'. Then a longer one before I met the "XXIInd Meeting" participants of the HOT-ROD RUN group in IDAHO! (Funny, - but we are in WYOMING!!)
 Black, fancy Custom Car

 Yellow Custom Car

In my own room, I had some VERY good COUNTRY MUSIC and some comedy with the STATLER BROTHERS SHOW (on TNN). I then deleted a few Digital Photos from the Camera - to make room for the rest of the USA 'snaps' that I was bound to take!! Interestingly, I also found more Country Music on CMTV!!!

Eventually, I deemed it to be my 'lights out time' and visited the 'Land of Nod'.

14 June '98

This morning, I woke up at 5.20am, a little earlier than I had hoped, but the MIND wouldn't let the BODY return to sleep!Instead, the MIND started playing around with a SCIENCE FICTION story as a possibility for my projects. It involves a collection of E-Mailers who get together world-wide to follow up on Andy Green's supersonic runs (in a car - YES this has already happened!) where the desert was turned to dust by THRUST SSC's shockwave. The story-line followed up on this car's digging into the pulverised-desert, with its increased resistance to forward-motion. These EMailers set out to find a worldwide solution to this problem, postulating that it isn't the CAR's problem - but the desert's problem, by being 'ploughed' by the shockwave.

Then I got into my own 'problem-solving-mode' and decided NOT to make it a fictional story but BE the first of those EMailers, for REAL, setting out to find possible solutions to exceeding Mach1 (by a substantial margin) in a land vehicle. In the last decade, I did in fact say what the problem was on THIS website under the

'New Studies' section

of the WLSR file. As that module shows - only one suggestion was forthcoming, but THAT project is SO SLOW in trying to go SO FAST, that its credibility is suspect!!

By 5.55am, I had written up my notes, - and I then had to decide on whether to return to sleep - or get up! I layed there until 6.12 am, pondering which way further those thoughts. By 6.35am, I got up and went to the 'lobby' and found Fran's notice about breakfast. It is to be at 7.10am.. I read my "Colonies in Space" book until then - and had my breakfast at FRAN's TABLE, comparing experiences.

Then back in my room by 7.40am I continued my book until 7.55am!! Then it was OUT to see the "EIEIO Road-runners" and some chats before doing some Digital photography (and fault-finding on the 'beastie').

Acquiring a JACKSON MAP at the "Best Western" front-desk, I then enquired about 'walking trails', found some and, eventually, started one from its TRAIL ENTRANCE on ELK RUN LANE.
