North West of WALES (mid-APRIL, with LLANDUDNO base) ::
This was postponed from 2001, due to Foot & Mouth disease in the Countryside! I re-booked for Mid-APRIL 2002.

Areas to receive my attention included :
Llandudno, Menai & Anglesey, the GREAT ORME, Colwyn Bay, Llanryst, Penmachno, Betwys y Coed, Pen-y-Pass & SNOWDON. Use was made of the ROVER tickets to get about the places!! (Many places were RE-visits!)
More details and travelogue information in the Llandudno Link .

South West of WALES (early May) ::

Details of this TENBY visit, with the travelogue information appears in the above Link! Also, an 'overview sketch' is in the JBC (2002) module..)

My First Visit to ALASKA!!( 2nd half of May!!)

This covered, amongst other places:-
VANCOUVER (again)
Cruise up the INSIDE PASSAGE
Skagway and the KLONDIKE territory
Glacier Bay
HUBBARD Glacier
VALDEZ and its Oil Terminus
Many other places.
You will notice that the MONTH and the ROUTE is such that I missed seeing, let alone taking part in, the IDITAROD TRAIL dog-sled commemoration race.

A few words about the 'IDITAROD':

Way back in 1925 in NOME, in the GOLD-RUSH days, lots of people were going down with Diptheria in a great Epidemic. Shortage of medication, and the place's remoteness, meant that the only solution was to have relay teams of HUSKIES bring the medication in from ANCHORAGE, (over 1000 miles away) over mountains and along frozen rivers .
They celebrate that feat EVERY YEAR in March, by competing in the world's biggest dog-sled race, over mountains, frozen rivers and 1049 miles - through 22 checkpoints with BIG teams of dogs and strict checkups in force!! Teams (leaving at 2 minute intervals) can be about 16 dogs, giving tremendous power, - considerably more than my GREENLANDIC teams of 7 and 9 respectively, even those team's strengths being unbelievably phenomenal!! On asking my mushers, there, whether they had done the IDITAROD, they said THAT is TOO far away and TOO EXPENSIVE!!

The TRAVELOGUE is in the ALASKAN WRITE-UP

GREAT YARMOUTH (Guest-House for the third week in JUNE)

The TRAVELOGUE is in the YARMOUTH-AREA WRITE-UP, but here for the moment are some quick snippets!

Deeply into their MODEL VILLAGE
Not particularly impressed by their WAX MUSEUM
Participating in the KARTING 2000 circuit Activities
Trying to find when the Observation Tower would open
Visiting AMAZONIA and the impressive SEA WORLD
Visiting the GORLESTON areas - and beach
Finding a newer JELLY FISH (for me) on the Yarmouth beach
Photography on and around the PLEASURE BEACH
Finding TRANSPORT to, and visiting, the CAISTER CASTLE Car & Bike
Collection!!
Travel was via London rather than Birmingham! That surprised a number of passengers!!!

MARLBOROUGH (Wiltshire) (Small Hotel near friends for the third week in JULY)
This used National Express coaches & Stagecoach Buses!

BLACKPOOL and its LIGHTS (4-11 SEPTEMBER)

In B&B accommodation!
Travel was via Birmingham & Preston.

In addition to the 'lights', I was to visit the ZOO, STANLEY PARK, The Pleasure Beach, all Piers, an exhibition on UFOs, Aliens & Crop Circles PLUS their MODEL VILLAGE and "STARTIME 2002" on North Pier - which was a Show involving The Bachelors, Susan Maughan, Bernie Clifton, Alan Randall; each performer bringing FAR more of their performing skills than we've ever seen in TV!!

Travelogue in the Linked Blackpool file.

CALIFORNIA & NEVADA: A remaining re-arranged, much postponed, trip. (Taken in 2nd half of October!)
This covered, amongst other places:-
Las Vegas
Hoover Dam
(South of Death Valley)
Mojave Desert
Los Angeles
Santa Barbara
MONTEREY
The 17 Mile DRIVE
SAN FRANCISCO
(and Alcatraz)
Many other places.

The TRAVELOGUE and its reasons will start to appear in the 'US West Coast Explorer' Link.

ANTARCTIC ADVENTURE: The TRAVELOGUE and its reasons will start to appear in the Antarctic Link.
