    IMPRESSIONS OF AUSTRALIA in 'EL NINO'

    I noticed the DROUGHT here in the far NORTH of Australia - and later on - was aware of the dried up River Beds (e.g Alice Springs etc) elsewhere. Farmers and others were struggling for survival and 'praying' for rains. Unfortunately, the El Nino effect was having its biggest bash of the CENTURY (that of 1997-8). Normally, of course, the very warm waters of the Central Pacific are pushed West and provide Australia with more than sufficient precipitation! The El Nino effect, occuring every few years, pushes that warm water (and interacts with it and absorbs its very moisture into the winds which head EASTWARDS to the west coasts of North and South Americas. Those countries, then, get severe storms and flooding - as we have all seen on TV!! I was in the middle of the 'moisture denial' phase that Australia was suffering!! It was really the tele-connection between EL NINO and LA NINA!! 18 Mar Wed arr Sydney - 2045 Novotel Darling Harbour (You may recall that the SYDNEY Olympics had its BOXING at Darling Harbour - at the Exhibition Centre - and that is where the British boxer, Audley Harrison, made an historic record as a Super Heavyweight! It explains, even way back in 1998, why so much building-work was confusing us all around the Harbour!)
    19 Mar Thurs "Settling-in" day & Ditto Personal walks/explorations MADE with DIDI. We had discussed making these walks whilst on the very long flights over from the UK! I had presented DIDI with a proposed walking route, missing out the shops, getting in ALL the parks, the harbour surrounds, the OPERA House, and whatever 'grabbed our fancy'! After just one small-stop in-town for Currency, an attractive old shopping arcade and the fabulous AMP Tower (tallest in Australia) we headed off for the GREEN areas. Totally enchanting!! All over Australia, up to now, they had boasted about their individual things being "the biggest in the World". In most, nay ALL, cases I had visited even larger items elsewhere the World. Their boasting has got to be taken with a pinch of salt!
    However, on todays trip, outside the construction of the SYDNEY OLYMPIC STADIUM, we saw, at a distance, the QLC. Those initials stand for "Quite Large Crane" - but, I hear elsewhere, that the QLC is the World's Largest Crane!

    MAY: ALYKES on the island of ZANTE(Zakinthos), GREECE

    This was my first ever trip to that Country - and further South than I'd ever been in Europe. However, by the time we ventured to this romantic spot on the island of Zante, I had already been to the Southern Hemisphere - and had already been to Egypt. So it was my third-most-southerly trip. Location:- Location
    It set the record for my most southerly European visit!! It follows the precedents set by the visits to Italy, Africa and Australia by NOT being to cool countries. Like many of the 1997 trips, this was, essentially, a romantic walking and rambling visit. It proved, in reality, to be a TORRID TORTURE-CHAMBER with the incredibly hot atmosphere, the burning sun and the biting insects. It has caused me to re-assess the wisdom of ventures into such atmospheres. Unlike Italy, Egypt and Australia - I did not return to a cool hotel room to avoid the onset of heat.
    The company was 'terrific' - shame about the temperature and the mosquitos! There were more, cooler, trips with the wonderful lady who accompanied me for a year. The coolest part of this island (but still too hot for me) was in the shade provided in the olive groves.
    We went on a special 'lap' of the island by boat passing all sorts of places like "smuggler's cove" etc. Smuggler's Cove

    AUGUST : A special trip to the BALTIC Sea Nations:

    Baltic Sea
    SAGA ROSE
    My Vessel on this occasion!

    This is the large craft that we travelled in. Unlike the recent boats off the Greek Islands, we not only heard about safety procedures, but participated in a MANDATORY exercise whilst we were still in dock, - donning the safety equipment and going to our own lifeboats complete with roll-calls for checks - as in the REAL THING. Our Welsh Captain did things properly. It made for confidence - USING the real equipment and going to the correct muster-station. Full marks to the crew and all concerned!

    SAGA ROSE2

    Very pleasant during the trip too!!

    * SWEDEN (Stockholm)

    After a North Sea crossing during which I met some interesting New Zealander's, an 'ex-pat Brit' who had served in Tanganyika, a guy from Florida etc, we all suffered later, to varying degrees with very choppy seas, loud engine noises and so on.

    I had effectively conquered sea-sickness during the 1994 Hurtigrute trip around Norway. These seas tried my techniques to the limit!! I did NOT get SICK on the journey - but there was some definite queeziness in our feelings and I, for one, missed breakfast AND lunch on Thursday, 27th August!! A nice attendant brought my requests to my cabin, - but they were VERY MINIMAL!

    As we approached closer to wide mouth of the River Elbe (which leads down to Hamburg, folks!) the waters became calmer - and this is where we picked up the 'pilot' who was sheltering from the conditions in the North Sea. He led us into the Kiel canal, which starts only a short way into the Elbe. That was the only bad weather we had - as the waters of the Baltic plus all the fjords, canals etc were beautifully user-friendly.

    Rather than take an optional-extra tour of Stocholm after arrival, I arranged cheaper transportation at each 'Baltic stop' and started like this in Stockholm!! Most of these expensive extras had already been booked whilst I took precautions (whilst at sea) in my cabin. However, when the opportunity arose, I did manage to book for a tour of Copenhagen, for very much later in the trip! Any place we stopped, there was often a 'shuttle-bus' to allow for free-style explorers with their transportation. I
    Christian Radice in dock
    got a very useful 'Stockholm Panoramic' trip by a bus/coach - and this covered me for a 2hour voyage around that delightful city. Great!! I returned to the SAGA ROSE and my cabin at about 12.50pm - in time for a delicious choice for my midday meal (called "lunch" by these 'toffs' on board).

    I had a little exploratory walk in the afternoon and tried to solve an 'apparent problem' with my 35mm camera - as no pictures had been taken on this trip successfully. I would have to take a 'new lot' on our way out of Stockholm - down the fjord in the fading evening light. This I did - successfully - as it happens!!

    * FINLAND (Helsinki)

    Our craft arrived in the Helsinki environs in early hours of 30th August '98. This will have been my second visit within a year! The first was in late 1997 when I met a very good lady-friend when I was somewhat north of Helsinki in the Lakes area. This time, not having a coach or a 'guide', I did a 100% walking exploration of this lovely city - complete with maps in foreign languages. I visited the Sibelius Sculpture Park, the flea- market, several other good sights and generally enjoyed my solitude in the drizzly environment.

    * RUSSIA (St Petersburg)

    The Palace

    The Winter Palace in the centre of St. Petersburg

    Kazan Cathedral

    Kazan Cathedral in Downtown St Petersburg!!

    IMPRESSIONS OF ST. PETERSBURG

    My Impressions on this occasion differed a little from my previous visit three years earlier. Then, I was totally enthralled by the spectacle and majesty of the city - "The World's Most Beautiful City"! On this occasion we approached from the Baltic direction (instead of from Moscow) and the initial views this time were 'far more tatty and decrepit'! On finding the downtown region of 'high-spectacle', yes it was still there, but although beautiful, the paint-work had suffered in the intervening period and was appearing run-down - just like other cities whose funds were a 'bit short'.

    Nevertheless, for me it was a sort of 'homecoming' and I didn't need a map. I roamed around and photographed at leisure, the cathedrals (especially the "Church on the Blood") and other unique buildings and park areas.

    TITANIC

    This seemed like an appropriate film to watch on board this cruise!!

    Just after the fantastic evening meal (from 7.15pm - 8.30pm)on 1st September, enroute from St Petersburg to Tallin (remember THAT catastrophe?) I went to the liner's theatre and watched that much-hyped file TITANIC. It was much better than I had expected and was a great mixture of historical detail, drama, romance and scientific hypotheses.

    Not only was it VERY good indeed, it was LONG, running for three and a quarter hours. Walking back to my cabin afterwards, it was quite surprising how DRY everything was. The stair-carpets and all the fine workmanship on the SAGA ROSE were still beautifully dry and showing no signs of an invading ocean - a pleasant relief after the film. Now getting late, I arrived at my cabin at 12.40am..

    Now, we are due to put our watches back tonight (it's west to Estonia) so at 12.53 am, I put mine back to 12.00 midnight. That saved having to make a date-change as well!! I could put back the odd few minutes in the morning when I got up.

    * ESTONIA (Tallinn)

    This was a beautiful little town with streets all hickle-dee- pickled and inviting one to explore. I got into its hills and visited its churches, castles and various interesting sights (only time for exterior viewing!). I intentionally got no currency as shops would have detracted from my missions.

    The town had beautiful parks, an intriguing Cathedral (Alexander Nevski!) and its own 'mini-place' with apologies to Brussels's 'Grande Place'. Bigger than a village square though!!

    * POLAND (Gdynia)

    Like the Estonia visit, I chose not to take currency but purely EXPLORE Gdynia (this is the seaside component of GDANSK, which you are more likely to have heard of!). After an early lunch, I caught a shuttle-bus at 1.30pm into the centre of this small town. Walks along the promenade were enjoyable, but even more intriging was a local park incorporating an interesting open-air aircraft-museum. So I photographed several of these (apparently non-secret!) Eastern Block fighter-aircraft. Quite an experience!!

    * DENMARK (Copenhagen)

    I arrived in Copenhagen on 5th Sept 98, the captain apologising for our early-arrival, apparently due to a strong tail-wind!! Before going on a tour of the city I did my own personal walk for about an hour.

    More on the big-trip later but FIRST, I'd like to comment on the LITTLE Mermaid statue near the harbour. She is a normal sized beautiful woman, a life-size statue of the artist's wife!! How BIG are mermaids supposed to be if this is LITTLE?
    Little Mermaid!! (on 35mm)

    * NORWAY (Oslo)

    Bislett Stadium

    Just stopped-off here to break the world mile record!!
    Well, not actually! I'm just doing a walkabout of the city - and Bislett Stadium was one thing that I missed out on during a previous visit.

    Overall, this trip had both a nice breadth and depth, surprisingly !!

    SEPTEMBER: My second trip to Eire

    My lady-friend (found in Finland) fixed us both up with a lovely spot in the north of Donegal on Fanad Head. I travelled to Belfast's City Airport first, by a Jersey Airlines 'BAe 146' from Birmingham, after which we motored in a northerly direction for a brief stop-over, near the Giant's Causeway,
    Giant's Causeway

    before continuing the following day, after an overnight bed & breakfast at a farmhouse near Eglington.

    Before crossing the 'border', we stocked up with food in a Londonderry supermarket - as there would be precious little opportunities thereafter. The signposts between 'Derry and Letterkenny were confusing (No, I tell a lie - they were WRONG!!) - which put us quite a few miles out.

    The Fanad Peninsular provided some VERY good scenery - up to our cottage (near Kindrum) and thereafter. The highlights for me were the Ballydaheen Gardens, the Seven Arches, the walk to the Giant Arch and the beauty and diversity of the "Glenveagh National Park".
    One GLENVEAGH view

    Other places visited, during this 'stay' were Cashelmore, Rathmullen, Portsalon, Tullyconnell, Mulroy & Doe Castle (with our prepacked sandwich lunches in some wild moorland scenery).

    OCTOBER: "Let's take a trip to NIAGARA!!"

    "this time we'll take a look at the Falls".

    So sang old blue-eyes (the late Frank Sinatra) . This trip was a joint one with my friend, first met in Finland, again, the first that either of us had visited there. It was about a week in duration, also covering visits to Toronto and Lake Ontario. We took a trip on a boat that gave excellent views of the Falls - by sailing near the foot of them. The set of boats doing this are all called "The Maid of the Mist" - each with their own individual numbers. Very good with each person donning their essential, included, individual plastic mac!!.
